Archbishop of Utrecht & Missionary to Frisia
November 7 · d. 739
also known as Clement
Willibrord was the Northumbrian monk who carried the gospel to the pagan Frisians and became the first archbishop of Utrecht. Trained at Ripon and for twelve years in Ireland, he crossed to Frisia in 690, was consecrated bishop at Rome by Pope Sergius, who gave him the name Clement, and made the monastery of Echternach his base and his burial place. He died in 739, an old man, after nearly fifty years among the people he had come to win. His feast is November 7.
Willibrord was a Northumbrian, born in the north of England about the year 658, and given by his father Wilgils while still a boy to the monastery at Ripon in Yorkshire, where Wilfrid ruled. When he was grown he crossed to Ireland, drawn by the fame of its learning and its holy men, and there he stayed twelve years, studying and praying at the monastery of Rathmelsigi under an exiled English monk named Egbert. Egbert had long dreamed of carrying the faith to the heathen peoples across the sea, the pagan tribes of the old homelands from whom the English had themselves come; and when Egbert was kept back, the dream passed to the younger man. In 690, at about thirty-two, Willibrord took ship with eleven companions and landed in Frisia, the low country of marsh and river along the North Sea coast, today the Netherlands and the German shore beside it.
It was dangerous ground. The Frisians were pagan, their king Radbod hostile, and a Christian preacher on that coast had no protection but God and whatever lord would shelter him. So Willibrord went first to Pippin, the Frankish ruler who held the southern part of the country, and won his favour and his guard. Then, at Pippin's urging, he did the thing that set the whole mission on a firm footing. He went to Rome. There Pope Sergius consecrated him bishop over the Frisians, in the church of Saint Cecilia on her feast day, and gave him a new name, Clement. He came back an archbishop with the pope's own commission, set his seat at Utrecht, and began to build.
He built as a man builds who means to stay. He pulled down the shrines of the old gods and raised churches on the cleared ground; he trained young Frisians as clergy, so the faith would have native hands to carry it; and he founded a monastery at Echternach, in the wooded valley of the Sure, today in Luxembourg, as the house that would anchor the mission and, in the end, hold his bones.
The old religion did not yield quietly, and one voyage tells how far Willibrord would go to break its hold. Sailing north, he came to an island the Frisians called Fositeland, sacred to the god Fosite and identified since with Heligoland in the North Sea. It was so holy in their eyes that no one dared touch the cattle that grazed there, and no one drew from its spring except in silence. Willibrord baptized three of his company in that spring, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and had some of the cattle killed for food, as if to say plainly that the god they feared was nothing and that the God he served was Lord even of that ground. King Radbod, when he heard, was enraged, and held the missionaries while for three days he cast lots to see which of them should die for the sacrilege. The lot never fell on Willibrord. One of his companions was chosen and killed, and won a martyr's crown; the rest, and their bishop, went free.
The work was not spared reverses. After Pippin died, Radbod drove the Franks back and swept the churches of Frisia away, and for a season it seemed the mission had been undone. But Radbod died in his turn, and Willibrord came back and rebuilt what had been thrown down, helped now by a younger Englishman, Boniface, who laboured three years at his side before going on to his own great mission among the Germans.
Willibrord lived to be very old, past eighty, still bishop of the church he had planted. He died at Echternach on the seventh of November, 739, and was buried in the monastery he had made. He had come to Frisia a stranger with eleven companions and no church at all; he left a country marked with the churches he had raised and the clergy he had taught, and a see at Utrecht that has never since been without a bishop. The seed he carried across the sea took root in the cold ground of Frisia, and it did not die with him.
How we know Willibrord is unusually good fortune for a missionary of his age, because two independent witnesses record him and one of them is his own hand. The first is Bede, who in the fifth book of his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, finished about 731, gives a plain and near-contemporary account of the mission: how Willibrord and his companions crossed to Frisia, won the favour of Pippin, and preached, and how, at Pippin's wish, he was sent to Rome to be made a bishop. Bede wrote within living memory of the events and had no stake in glorifying Echternach; his notice is the sober frame on which the rest hangs. In L. C. Jane's translation at the Fordham Medieval Sourcebook, Bede records that Willibrord was consecrated in the church of Saint Cecilia and that "the pope gave him the name of Clement, and sent him back to his bishopric, fourteen days after his arrival at Rome." Bede dates the consecration to 696.
The fuller Life is Alcuin's. Alcuin of York, the great scholar of Charlemagne's court, wrote the Life of Willibrord (Vita Willibrordi) about 796, in a prose and a verse version, at the request of Beornred, abbot of Echternach, and with a tie of his own to the saint's kin. It is a hagiography, made to honour the monastery's patron and to be read on his feast, and its miracles are told for edification. But Alcuin drew on Echternach's own memory and on writings now lost, and much of what he reports of the shape of the mission agrees with Bede. In C. H. Talbot's translation, also at the Fordham Medieval Sourcebook, Alcuin describes the man himself: he was "of middle height, dignified mien, comely of face, cheerful in spirit, wise in counsel, pleasing in speech, grave in character and energetic in everything he undertook for God."
The third witness is the strangest and the most intimate. A liturgical calendar made for Willibrord's own use survives in Paris (Bibliothèque nationale de France, Latin 10837), carrying in the margin a note in what is taken to be his own hand, set against the days of November. In the translation in the Oxford Cult of Saints database, the note reads:
In the name of the Lord, Clemens Willibrord came across the sea to Francia in the six hundred and ninetieth year from the Incarnation of Christ, and in God's name in the six hundred and ninety-fifth year from the Incarnation of the Lord, although unworthy, he was ordained bishop in Rome by the apostolic man, the lord Pope Sergius.
Willibrord is kept on November 7, the day of his death, at Utrecht, at Echternach, and in the calendar of the Church of England. He is honoured as the apostle of Frisia and the first archbishop of Utrecht, and he is the patron saint of the Netherlands and of Luxembourg, whose only saint he is. In art he appears as a bishop, and his particular emblem is a cask or barrel, from the story that he once made a small store of wine feed many; he is invoked against convulsions and the falling sickness.
The most remarkable of the things done in his memory is still done. On Whit Tuesday the town of Echternach keeps the dancing procession, the Springprozession, in which thousands of pilgrims move through the streets toward his tomb in a stepping, hopping dance, rank upon rank, while the bands play one repeated tune round and round. It is the last surviving dancing procession in Europe, documented at Echternach for many centuries, and in 2010 it was inscribed on the UNESCO list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. His relics rest beneath the basilica there, and the little country that keeps the dance calls him its own.

The note gives 695 where Bede gives 696, a difference of a year of the kind common in early dating, and it is Willibrord's own reckoning; the calendar was edited by H. A. Wilson for the Henry Bradshaw Society in 1918.
The outward frame of the life is secure. Willibrord was born in Northumbria about 658, given as a boy to Ripon under Wilfrid, and formed for twelve years in Ireland at Rathmelsigi under the exiled Egbert, where he was ordained priest in 688. He crossed to Frisia in 690, was consecrated at Rome in 695 or 696, and set his see at Utrecht, the old fortress Bede names Wiltaburg. He founded Echternach on land given by the Frankish noblewoman Irmina about 698. He carried the mission beyond the Frankish frontier, to the Danes, from whom Alcuin says he brought back thirty boys to raise as Christians, and to the Frisians beyond Radbod's reach; and when Pippin died in 714 and Radbod recovered Frisia, the churches were scattered, so that only after Radbod's death in 719 could Willibrord rebuild, now with the help of the young Boniface, who worked with him about three years. He died at Echternach on 7 November 739, in roughly his eighty-first year.
Of the miracles, the Fositeland voyage is the test of how to read Alcuin. The church long told, on Alcuin's authority, that Willibrord landed on the island the Frisians held sacred to the god Fosite, commonly identified with Heligoland, and there baptized in the forbidden spring and killed the sacred cattle, and that when Radbod cast lots for three days to find a victim, the lot fell not on the bishop but on one companion, who died a martyr. Alcuin wrote to edify, and the framing of the scene is a hagiographer's. But the deliberate breaking of a pagan sanctuary was the ordinary and hazardous business of the frontier mission, remembered of Boniface at the oak of Geismar and of Willibrord more than once, and there is nothing improbable in a bishop who staked his God against the old gods on their own holy ground. Whether the lots fell as Alcuin tells them or not, the story keeps a real thing about the man and his mission, and Echternach kept it because it was true to him.
Almighty and everlasting God, you called your servant Willibrord to preach the Gospel to the Frisian people: Raise up in this and every land evangelists and heralds of your kingdom, that your Church may proclaim the unsearchable riches of our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
