Red-Letter Day
The Transfiguration
August 6
also known as The Transfiguration, Feast of Tabor
On August 6 the Church keeps the day Christ took Peter, James and John up a mountain and was changed before them, his face and clothing shining, Moses and Elijah beside him and a voice from the cloud naming him Son. The East has kept the feast far longer than the West, which received it late and by a single papal act in 1457.
Six days after Peter had confessed him at Caesarea Philippi, Jesus took Peter, James and John up a high mountain by themselves. There he was changed in front of them. His clothing turned white, Moses and Elijah stood with him and spoke with him, and Peter, not knowing what else to say, offered to build three shelters and stay. A cloud came over them and a voice out of it said that this was his beloved Son, and that they were to hear him. Then the cloud lifted and there was no one with them but Jesus, and he told them to say nothing until he had risen from the dead.
That last instruction is the key to the whole scene. What the three men saw was given to them on the way down toward Jerusalem, where their teacher would be arrested and killed, and it was given so that the killing would not destroy them. Leo the Great, preaching at Rome in the fifth century, said that the first object of the Transfiguration was "to remove the offense of the cross from the disciple's heart, and to prevent their faith being disturbed by the humiliation of His voluntary Passion." The Byzantine kontakion of the feast says the same thing in different words and out of a different tradition, without any sign that either borrowed from the other: the disciples beheld the glory, in Hapgood's translation, "that when they should see thee crucified they might comprehend that thy suffering was voluntary." Two churches, arriving separately at the same account of why the mountain came before the cross.
The day itself has a stranger history than the event. The Christian East kept it long before the Latin West had heard of it: the Armenians counted it among their greatest annual feasts, the Greeks gave it a vigil and an octave, and no Latin source mentions it before the ninth century. When the West did take it up, it did so diocese by diocese, on four different dates, without agreement. What finally fixed it was not a council or a doctrine but a despatch. News of the relief of Belgrade reached Rome on August 6, 1456, and the next year Callixtus III decreed by bull that the Transfiguration should be kept throughout Christendom, hoping, in the words of Ludwig von Pastor working from the Vatican archives, "to revive the enthusiasm for the holy war. As far as the princes were concerned, however, these expectations were vain." A feast enlisted as recruitment, and by its promoter's own record it failed at that. Callixtus died on the evening of the feast he had instituted, two years later.
It failed as war policy and survived as worship. What the day gives is what Leo said it gave, and what Peter wanted to keep on the mountain and could not: a sight of the glory that is really there under the ordinary appearance of things, granted, as the Byzantine troparion has it, "in so far as they were able to bear it."
You will probably not be given a mountain. What the day sets before you instead is a promise that the glory was there all along, veiled rather than absent, and that the three men who saw it were sent straight back down into the week that killed their teacher. The collect our own tradition prays on this day asks not for the vision Peter wanted to hold but for something harder and more available: that being delivered from the disquietude of this world, we may by faith behold the King in his beauty. Faith, not sight, is what it names as the organ of seeing. Where in your own ordinary week have you been asking for the mountain, when what is on offer is the harder gift of seeing by faith what is already in front of you?
Two things have to be held apart when this feast is discussed: the event, which Scripture reports without any date at all, and the day, which has a documented and rather awkward history. The Gospels give only an interval, six days or about eight after Peter's confession. No month or year is recoverable, and any calendar date attached to the event itself would be invention.
The day's own record is thinner than it looks. The Western chronology repeated in almost every account of this feast traces to a single source: Frederick Holweck's entry in the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1912. Holweck offers, as his own probability judgement rather than as attested fact, that the feast "probably originated, in the fourth or fifth century, in place of some pagan nature-feast, somewhere in the highlands of Asia." Between that conjecture and the first witness there is no contemporary documentation at all. This feast, put plainly, has no documented origin.
The earliest origin-story comes from the Armenian bishop Gregory Arsharuni about 690, who ascribed the feast to Gregory the Illuminator, saying he had substituted it for a pagan festival called Vartavarh, "roseflame," and kept the old name because Christ opened his glory like a rose on Mount Tabor. It is a claim made some 370 years after the act it reports, and Holweck, who preserves it, prints its disproof in the same paragraph: the feast is not found in the two oldest Armenian calendars, those published by Conybeare in 1905. The tradition deserves reporting; so does the fact that the calendars do not carry it. Three explanations for the August 6 date circulate (a dedication on Mount Tabor, the Armenian substitution, and the 1457 papal act), and only the last has evidence behind it. The record does not converge, and this page does not resolve it.
The West came late. No Latin mention appears before 850, in the Martyrology of Wandelbert of Prüm, and adoption then proceeded diocese by diocese from about the tenth century: August 6 in most places, July 27 in Gaul and England, March 17 at Meissen, September 3 at Halberstadt. In the twelfth century Peter the Venerable, Abbot of Cluny, legislated the feast for every Cluniac house, arguing both from its dignity and, tellingly, from "the ancient and present-day usage of many churches throughout the world" which already honoured it no less than Epiphany or the Ascension. He was importing a feast, not inventing one. Callixtus III extended it to the whole Latin Church in 1457; the English Convocation adopted it in 1483. Sarum kept it on August 6, ranked a Lesser Double, twenty-first in that list. The bull's opening words cannot be given here: three incompatible titles circulate and none is verified, and Pastor, the one historian who followed the citation chain into the archives, gives no incipit at all.
The Roman calendar had an older occupant of the date. August 6 belonged to Pope Sixtus II and the deacons Felicissimus and Agapitus, martyred under Valerian; the 1962 Missale Romanum still commemorates them on the same day as the Transfiguration Mass. Their Mass in the Gregorian sacramentary carries a blessing of new grapes; a search of the whole text returns not one occurrence of the word transfiguration. The Roman books held a harvest blessing on August 6 for centuries before they held any Transfiguration text at all, and the feast apparently inherited it, though no source documents the transfer as an act.
Almost every tradition keeps this feast, and almost none of them on the same day. The Byzantine churches rank it among the Twelve Great Feasts, with vigil and octave, falling inside the Dormition Fast, which relaxes for the day to permit fish, wine and oil. Grapes are blessed at the end of the Liturgy; where grapes do not grow, apples, which gives the Russian and Ukrainian folk name Apple Saviour, and in the far north, peas. The Armenians have never kept the fixed date at all, but a movable Sunday ninety-eight days after Easter, and the day is Vardavar, kept with roses and with mass public dousing in water, a custom older than its Christian name. In Ethiopia and Eritrea the day is Debre Tabor, popularly Buhe, and it is the one observance in this feast's whole history whose primary actors are children: boys go from house to house singing Hoya Hoye and receive mulmul bread, blessing the household for the year, with bonfires on the eve and whip-cracking said to echo the voice from the cloud. In El Salvador the Transfiguration is the national patronal feast, El Divino Salvador del Mundo, the country's own namesake, and on the evening of August 5 an image of Christ is carried through San Salvador on a structure representing Mount Tabor and revealed in white before the cathedral.
The English-speaking West is the odd case: a Eucharist and no domestic custom at all. Its harvest layer went with the Sixtus Mass and nothing replaced it, and the day never produced a household object of the kind Candlemas and Palm Sunday produced.

The English story is one of removal and slow return. The feast is absent from the 1549 Prayer Book kalendar entirely: the August column carries one saint, Bartholomew. It is said to have been restored under Archbishop Parker as a black-letter day, named in the calendar with no collect, epistle or gospel, but the year for that (1560 or 1561) could not be sourced from any kalendar and is stated here as unverified. Whitgift later defended such days on civil rather than devotional grounds, as marking the times of payments and of the courts. The Westminster Directory of 1645 abolished holy days as a class, declaring that "Festival days, vulgarly called Holy-days, having no warrant in the word of God, are not to be continued"; the Transfiguration, long since reduced to a bare name, had little left to lose. Samuel Pepys, a diligent and opinionated churchgoer, passes ten Augusts in his diary without the day once surfacing.
Propers returned first in America. The 1892 Book of Common Prayer restored the feast to full status with its own collect, epistle and gospel; the argument for it, in William Reed Huntington's own words, was that restoring it "would also serve to enhance the symmetry of the Christian Year," which is a structural case rather than a diagnosed pastoral need. Huntington afterwards listed "the recovered Feast of the Transfiguration" among the revision's indisputable gains, though an English reviewer thought the new collect inferior to the one in the Sarum Breviary. In England, propers were written for August 6 in the 1928 Proposed Book and lost with it when Parliament rejected the book twice, in December 1927 and June 1928; the Church of England had no lawfully authorized propers for the day between 1549 and the modern books.
The two English collects that resulted are independent prayers and are often confused. Huntington's ("delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty") runs from 1892 through the American books to BCP 2019's August 6. The other ("strengthened to bear the cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory") was first printed for August 6 in the rejected English 1928 book, and the American and ACNA books use it on the Last Sunday of Epiphany. BCP 2019 keeps both observances, one collect on each.
One further fork is purely mechanical. The Revised Julian calendar proposed at Constantinople in 1923 and adopted in Greece in 1924 means that "August 6" now names two civil dates inside Eastern Orthodoxy alone, with no theological disagreement about the feast whatsoever.
British (Received Pronunciation): Hermon /ˈhɜːrmən/
O God, who on the holy mount revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistening: Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
