Ecumenical Commemoration
Reformer & Pastor of Geneva
May 27 · d. 1564
also known as Jean Cauvin
John Calvin, born at Noyon in Picardy in 1509, was a French lawyer and humanist who became the pastor and teacher of Geneva. Never ordained in the Roman church, he wrote the Institutes of the Christian Religion at twenty-six as a plea to a king who was burning his countrymen, was twice made a Genevan against his own plans, and left behind a church order, an academy, and thousands of sermons. He died on 27 May 1564 and was buried the next day in an unmarked grave, by his own instruction.
John Calvin never meant to be any of this. He was a lawyer's son from Noyon in Picardy, born in 1509, given a chaplaincy at the cathedral when he was twelve because that was how a careful father provided for a clever boy, and set to civil law at Orleans because his father judged it the safer road. He was good at it. He was better at Greek and Latin letters, and his first book, at twenty-three, was a commentary on Seneca: a young humanist's calling card, not a reformer's manifesto.
Then something happened that he would describe, twenty-five years later, in six words: "God by a sudden conversion subdued and brought my mind to a teachable frame." He says he was too obstinately fixed in the old ways to be pulled out of them gently, so he was not pulled gently. And he says that within a year, before he thought himself anything but a beginner, people who wanted purer doctrine were coming to him to learn.
That was inconvenient, because John Calvin wanted a corner and a desk. He says so plainly. He was bashful, he loved the shade, and he kept looking for somewhere quiet to be unknown; and every retreat he found, he wrote, turned into a public school.
Meanwhile France was burning its evangelicals. His friend Nicolas Cop, newly Rector of the University of Paris, gave an address on All Saints' Day 1533 that sounded far too much like the new teaching, and both men fled. Calvin ended up in Basel, and there, an exile at twenty-six, he wrote a small book of six chapters explaining what these hunted people actually believed, and addressed it to King Francis I of France, who was doing the hunting. He told the king that the book had begun as nothing grand: "My intention was only to furnish a kind of rudiments, by which those who feel some interest in religion might be trained to true godliness." Then he made his case, and in the middle of it came the sentence that shows what the book really was: "For this hope some of us are in bonds, some beaten with rods, some made a gazing-stock, some proscribed, some most cruelly tortured, some obliged to flee." That is the Institutes of the Christian Religion. Not a system first. A petition for the lives of his friends.
And then Geneva. In the summer of 1536 a war had closed the direct road, and Calvin, detouring toward Strasbourg and his quiet desk, stopped in Geneva for a single night. Someone recognized him. Word reached Guillaume Farel, who was leading the city's raw new Reformation and needed help badly, and Farel came and asked. Calvin said no. He explained about the private studies. So Farel, in Calvin's own telling, "proceeded to utter an imprecation that God would curse my retirement, and the tranquillity of the studies which I sought, if I should withdraw and refuse to give assistance, when the necessity was so urgent." Calvin was, he says, so stricken with terror that he unpacked. He felt it "as if God had from heaven laid his mighty hand upon me to arrest me."
He got two years before the city threw him out. He got three years at Strasbourg with Martin Bucer, the happiest of his life by his own account, pastoring French refugees, and it was Bucer who found him a wife: Idelette de Bure, a widow, whom he married in August 1540. Then Geneva changed its mind and asked him back, and he went back, unwillingly, to the city that had expelled him, and stayed twenty-three years. He was not its ruler. He was a foreigner without citizenship until 1559, five years before he died. He was often opposed and sometimes beaten.
Those years cost him. An infant son, born and dead in 1542, of whom he said: "God has given me a little son, and taken him away; but I have myriads of children in the whole Christian world." Idelette, dead in the spring of 1549 after nine years, "the excellent companion of my life," "the ever-faithful assistant of my ministry." He never married again. And there was a thing done in Geneva in 1553 that he never explained away and that this page will not explain away either: Michael Servetus, who had denied the Trinity, was arrested at Calvin's instigation, tried by the city council, and burned at Champel on 27 October. Calvin sought the arrest and supported the sentence. He wrote to Farel hoping the severity of the punishment might be lessened, and Farel wrote back rebuking him for the tenderness of it. That is the record. It is not a rumour, and it is not smaller than it looks.
He preached, meanwhile, more than two thousand times, extempore, without notes, and never wrote a word of it down; the sermons survive only because refugees hired a man named Denis Raguenier to sit and take them in shorthand. He founded a school in 1559 that opened with some nine hundred students and is a university still.
At the end he was fifty-four and could hardly breathe. On 28 April 1564 he called the ministers of Geneva to his room and told them, of the years when the city had been chaos and men had heaped indignities on him, "the Lord our God so confirmed me, who am by no means naturally bold, (I say what is true,) that I succumbed to none of their attempts." Then he apologized. If, while ill, they had experienced any degree of peevishness from him, he begged their pardon, and thanked them. He shook each man's hand. Beza, who was there, wrote that they left him with eyes certainly not unmoistened. In May he wrote to Farel, then seventy-nine, telling him not to make the journey. Farel made it anyway, sat with him, and went home the next day.
Three days before that letter, Calvin had dictated his will to a notary, who wrote it down word for word. It is the will of a man who had spent his whole life explaining what God requires, and it does not explain anything. It asks. "I trust to no other security for my salvation than this, and this only, viz., that as God is the Father of mercy, he will show himself such a Father to me, who acknowledge myself to be a miserable sinner."
He died on the evening of 27 May 1564. The city's own register entered it in the plainest words a clerk could find: Ce iourd'huy environ huit heures du soir le sp. Ian Calvin est allé à Dieu, this day, about eight in the evening, the honourable Jean Calvin went to God. Beza, at the bedside, said he was sensible almost to the last breath and looked much more like one sleeping than dead. The next day they buried him at Plainpalais with no stone, because he had told them to, and no one now knows the spot. He had spent his life saying that our wisdom is the knowledge of God and of ourselves, and that we are not our own; and when it came to his own grave he was consistent to the end, and let it be lost.
You may find, reading Calvin's own account of himself, that the man is nothing like his reputation: bashful, drawn to the shade, forever looking for a quiet corner and forever finding that the corner had filled with people. He did not choose Geneva. He was cursed into it by a friend, and he stayed twenty-three years in a city that had once thrown him out, and he apologized on his deathbed for being peevish while he was dying. Whatever else that is, it is not the portrait of a man who wanted the job. Consider the retreat you are protecting: the quiet you have arranged, the work you would rather be doing, the corner you keep finding your way back to. If God has laid a hand on your shoulder in the doorway of it, what is it that you are being asked to unpack?
Calvin is one of the best-documented lives of the sixteenth century, and the documentation is of an unusual kind: he is very largely his own witness. The two indispensable first-person sources are the preface he wrote in 1557 to his Commentary on the Book of Psalms, which contains the only account we have of his conversion and of Farel's imprecation, and his last will, dictated on 25 April 1564 to the Genevan notary Peter Chenalat, who states that he took it down word for word as Calvin dictated and rehearsed it. Beside these stand the eyewitness record of Theodore Beza, his colleague and chosen successor, whose Life of Calvin appeared within a year of the death and supplies the farewell addresses of 27 and 28 April 1564 and the deathbed scene; and the Register of the Council of Geneva, a civic record, which entered the death on the day it happened. Beza was writing the founding memorial of the church he now led, and every motive to edify was his; he was also in the room. The connected modern narrative most often relied on is Philip Schaff's History of the Christian Church, volume VIII (1892), a Protestant historian working from the Noyon registers, the Council Register and the Opera, and willing to call the Servetus execution a stain; the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1908 supplies the counter-tradition's framing and, usefully, states outright what a hostile source had no motive to concede: that Calvin was never ordained and took no vows.
The dates that can be fixed are fixed closely. Born 10 July 1509 at Noyon; benefices from 1521, 1527 and 1529; his father Gerard Cauvin dead on 25 or 26 May 1531; the Cop address on 1 November 1533; the first Institutes printed at Basel in March 1536; expelled from Geneva on 22 and 23 April 1538; married in August 1540; recalled to Geneva 13 September 1541, with the Ecclesiastical Ordinances adopted 20 November of that year; the Academy dedicated in St Pierre on 5 June 1559; dead 27 May 1564. No baptismal record survives, and the year of his mother's death is not recoverable from the sources consulted here.
One date is genuinely unsettled, and it is the one the story turns on. Calvin says only that God converted him suddenly; he does not say when, and he wrote the account twenty-five years after the fact, inside a passage defending his right to speak for the Reform. Schaff places it in the second half of 1532 and concedes in the same breath that others argue for 1527 or 1528, or for the beginning of 1533. Each dating asks something of the reader. Late 1532 asks us to trust a retrospective and rhetorically shaped memory about timing. The earlier dating reads the resigned benefices and the family's exposure to the new teaching as a conversion already under way, which implies a gradual break and sits badly with Calvin's own word, sudden. The later dating makes the Cop affair itself the decisive turn rather than a consequence of a turn already taken. No source consulted here adjudicates between them. Calvin's own account is the sole primary evidence, and by Schaff's own admission the question is open.
Calvin has no shrine, and that is not an accident of history but an instruction he left. His body lay in state after his death on 27 May 1564, and as the crowds came to look at it his colleagues grew afraid they would be accused of fostering a new saint's veneration; so he was buried the next day at Plainpalais, in a plain coffin, without monument or ceremony, in a plot that cannot now be identified. By the nineteenth century the keepers of the ground, tired of being asked, had set a modest marker bearing only the initials J.C. on a plausible spot. There is no reliquary, no pilgrimage, no canonization file, because the man spent his life arguing against exactly that machinery and was consistent about his own bones.
What exists instead is a commemoration on the day he died. The Evangelical Church in Germany keeps him on 27 May in its Evangelischer Namenkalender, issued from 1969; the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America keeps the same day under the heading Renewers of the Church, a category created by the Lutheran Book of Worship in 1978 precisely so that Reformation figures could be remembered without being treated as saints in the older sense. Reformed and Presbyterian bodies are reported to keep the day as well, though that could not be confirmed here.
The visible legacy is institutional rather than devotional. The Academy he founded in 1559 is the University of Geneva; its lower school is the Collège Calvin, still teaching. The Auditoire beside St Pierre, where he lectured, is still a place of worship, home to Dutch and Italian Reformed congregations and to a Church of Scotland congregation on Sundays. His preaching chair stands roped off inside the cathedral. Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, founded in 1876, carry his name across an ocean. And in the Parc des Bastions, on a wall begun in 1909 and finished in 1917, Paul Landowski and Henri Bouchard carved him five metres tall beside Farel, Beza and Knox, under the motto of the city he served, Post Tenebras Lux, after darkness, light.
The quotations above come from four bodies of text, all available in public-domain English. The Institutes of the Christian Religion is quoted throughout in Henry Beveridge's translation of 1845, from the final Latin edition of 1559: the opening on the twofold knowledge of God and of ourselves at Book I, chapter 1, section 1; the appeal to Francis I, both "a kind of rudiments" and the catalogue of sufferings, from the Prefatory Address, whose Basel dating is discussed above; and "we are not our own" at Book III, chapter 7, section 1, the chapter headed "A Summary of the Christian Life. Of Self-Denial." Thomas Norton made the first English translation in 1561, two years after the Latin; John Allen's followed in 1813 and Beveridge's in 1845, and Ford Lewis Battles's translation, edited by John T. McNeill for the Library of Christian Classics in 1960, is the current scholarly standard.
The conversion ("God by a sudden conversion subdued and brought my mind to a teachable frame") and the account of Farel's imprecation both come from the Author's Preface to the Commentary on the Book of Psalms, dated at Geneva 22 July 1557, in the nineteenth-century Calvin Translation Society version. The words at the deathbed, at the farewell of 28 April 1564 and in the last letter to Farel, together with the Testament of 25 April 1564, are printed in Beza's Life of Calvin and in the same society's Selected Works of John Calvin: Tracts and Letters, volume one, translated by Beveridge and Jules Bonnet. The remarks on his dead son and on Idelette, and the Council Register's entry for the evening of 27 May 1564, are quoted from Schaff's History of the Christian Church, volume VIII.
Calvin's complete works were edited by Baum, Cunitz and Reuss as Ioannis Calvini Opera quae supersunt omnia, fifty-nine volumes in the Corpus Reformatorum, Braunschweig, 1863 to 1900; the Opera Selecta of Barth, Niesel and Scheuner followed in five volumes between 1926 and 1952, and a new critical edition has been appearing from Droz in Geneva since 1992. The sermons are a separate and unfinished story. Denis Raguenier was hired in 1549 to take them down as they were preached; about a third survive, fourteen unrecognized volumes were identified in the Geneva public library by Hanns Rückert in 1928, the Supplementa Calviniana were begun to print them, and as recently as 1994 eighty-seven sermons on Isaiah turned up in the library of the French Protestant Church of London.
Smaller conflicts stand unresolved and are better left standing. The dedication to Francis I is dated 23 August 1535 in the first edition and 1 August 1536 in the text Henry Beveridge translated: an edition difference, not an error, and the safe statement is simply that it was written from Basel before the March 1536 printing. The last letter to Farel is dated 11 May 1564 in the Beveridge and Bonnet edition and 2 May in Schaff's translation of the same Latin. The sibling count differs between sources, Schaff giving four brothers and two sisters while the Catholic Encyclopedia's four sons and two daughters yields three brothers; only Charles and Antoine are named anywhere. The wedding day is commonly given as 10 August 1540, with other days in that month in circulation and Schaff saying only "early August."
Two things widely believed are not supported. The Five Points of what is called Calvinism were codified at the Synod of Dort in 1618 and 1619, fifty-four years after Calvin's death, and should not be read back onto him. And the link between Calvinism and the rise of capitalism is Max Weber's twentieth-century sociological reading of a later culture, not anything Calvin taught.
O God, by your grace your servant John Calvin, kindled by the flame of your love, became a burning and shining light in your Church, turning pride into humility and error into truth: Grant that we may be set aflame with the same spirit of love and discipline, and walk before you as children of light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
