For Guidance

O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices; that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path we may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Circumcision and Holy Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Almighty God, your blessed Son fulfilled the covenant of circumcision for our sake, and was given the Name that is above every name: Give us grace faithfully to bear his Name, and to worship him with pure hearts according to the New Covenant; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

On January 1 the church marks Christ's circumcision on the eighth day of his life and the giving of his name. This collect, new to the ACNA's 2019 prayer book, is the first Anglican prayer to weave both themes together in a single petition, drawing on Luke 2:21 and Paul's great hymn in Philippians 2.
