Commontide
Liturgical Color: Red
Palm Sunday
Almighty and everlasting God, in your tender love for us you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon himself our nature, and to suffer death upon the Cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and come to share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Holy Week
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. For our sins he was lifted high upon the Cross, that he might draw the whole world to himself; and by his suffering and death he became the author of eternal salvation for all who put their trust in him.

Red Letter Day
Good Friday is the day the church keeps in memory of the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, observed on the Friday of Holy Week, between Maundy Thursday and the Easter Vigil. It is kept by fasting and by a liturgy unlike any other in the year. Its shape in the West is ancient, attested at Jerusalem by the late fourth century, and its keeping is nearly universal among Christians, East and West.
Good Friday is the annual commemoration of the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is the second day of the Paschal Triduum and, together with Holy Saturday, one of only two days in the entire Christian year on which the Eucharist is not celebrated. The name 'Good Friday' is peculiar to English; other languages use terms meaning 'Holy Friday' (German Karfreitag, from Old High German kara, 'grief'), 'Great Friday' (Greek Megale Paraskeve), or 'Friday of the Passion' (Latin Feria sexta in Parasceve). The English 'Good' likely derives from an older sense of the word meaning 'holy' or 'God's,' though folk etymology sometimes attributes it to the goodness of what was accomplished on this day. The observance is among the oldest in Christianity. The Didascalia Apostolorum (third century, Syria) prescribes a Friday fast in explicit commemoration of the crucifixion. By the fourth century, Egeria describes a Good Friday service in Jerusalem centered on the veneration of a relic believed to be the True Cross — the practice that would shape Western devotion for a millennium. The liturgy of the Solemn Collects, in which the Church prays for every estate of humanity, is attested in Rome from at least the fifth century and may descend from earlier intercessory forms. The custom of reading or chanting the Passion Gospel on this day is documented from the same period. The BCP 2019 classifies Good Friday as a day of 'special devotion and total abstinence,' and no holy day or observance can replace its propers.
Good Friday is liturgically unique in its austerity and dramatic power. The ministers enter in silence. No opening acclamation is given — the service begins with a period of silent prayer followed by the appointed collect. The reading or chanting of the Passion Gospel — traditionally from John 18–19, sometimes performed by multiple voices representing the Evangelist, Christ, and the crowd — is the central act of the liturgy. The Solemn Collects that follow are among the most ancient intercessory prayers in Christian worship, with roots traceable to the fifth-century Roman Rite. They pray for the whole Church, for the nations, for the suffering, for unbelievers — casting the net as wide as the arms of the Cross. The Devotion before the Cross (or Veneration of the Cross) is optional in the BCP 2019 but deeply rooted: Egeria witnessed pilgrims venerating the Cross in Jerusalem in the 380s, and the practice spread throughout Christendom. The Reproaches (Improperia) — 'O my people, what have I done to you?' — are a medieval Western addition that powerfully voices Christ's lament over his people's rejection. The absence of the Eucharist is itself a theological statement: the Church fasts from the sacrament as it keeps vigil beside the Cross. The bare altar, the unveiled crucifix, the prostration of ministers — every element of the Good Friday liturgy communicates through restraint and absence rather than abundance.
