Maundy Thursday is the Thursday of Holy Week, on which the church keeps the night of the Last Supper: the institution of the Eucharist, the washing of the disciples' feet, and the agony in the garden. It takes its name from the Latin mandatum, the new commandment given at that table. Kept at Jerusalem, Antioch, North Africa and Asia Minor by the late fourth century, it has carried the reconciliation of penitents, the blessing of the year's holy oils, and the giving of alms.
